伸ばして祝おう！“ひげ”月間
#Movember
今回のテーマはMovemberです。聞き慣れないこの言葉、実は口ひげを意味するmoustacheと、11月のNovemberを掛けて作った造語なんです。11月にひげを伸ばし続けることで、男性の健康、特に前立腺がんへの意識を高め、患者への寄付を募ろうというもの。友達や同僚と一緒にひげを伸ばし、楽しい写真を投稿することでチャリティに参加できるとあって、今や発祥地のオーストラリアだけでなく欧米でも人気の記念日です。ひげに関する様々な英語表現とともに、SNSならではの新しい社会貢献について学びます。

髭の著名人と言えばAbraham Lincolnリンカーン（第１６代アメリカ合衆国大統領）　髭にまつわるエピソード
大統領選投票の1ヵ月前に運命をを変える1通の手紙を受け取る、それはGrace pedell（11歳）ニューヨークに住む少女からだった
「あなたの顔は細いから髭を生やしたほうが素敵です」
　リンカーンは髭を生やし1860年11月6日大統領選に勝利する。
　その手紙の文面
I have got 4 brothers and part of them will vote for you any way and if you will let your whiskers grow I will try and get the rest of them to vote for you.

番組の後半では、もう一つのハッシュタグ、#TurnoutTuesdayをご紹介します。11月6日(火曜日)はアメリカ中間選挙の投票日。先日人気歌手のテイラー・スウィフトさんが、自身のSNSで民主党支持と有権者登録を呼びかけ、若者を中心に登録者数が急増するなど、大きな注目を集めています。銃規制を訴える若者たちが立ち上げたこのハッシュタグを見ながら、中間選挙の行方とアメリカの未来について考えます。

アメリでは投票率が5割程度、特に若者の投票率が低い
SNSを通じた投票への呼びかけが、中間選挙にどう影響するか注目されている
