Not only must animals be healthy, but they should also be able to display behavior typical of their species.
Some hardcore animal rights advocates oppose all use of animals, no matter how humane or how responsible it is. They say animals should not be used by people for anything-for food, entertainment, experiments or anything else.
That reminds me-Israel has banned the sale of fur in the fashion industry. It’s the first country to outlaw that controversial material.
Britain has banned fur farming, and other European countries, including the Netherlands and Belgium, have also taken steps to end the practice.
That brings to mind an incident a few years ago when an animal rights group blockaded distribution centers of a fast-food restaurant chain in the chain commit to plant-based food. They said the meat and dairy industry is destroying our planet by causing widespread deforestation of rainforests, emitting immense quantities of greenhouse gases and killing countless numbers of animals each year.
Animal welfare, in its simplest form, refers to the relationships people have with animals and the duty we have to ensure that the animals under our care are treated humanely and responsibly. That can include how they are housed, how they’re handled, and their general well-being.
