Believe It or Not (1)
Kyohei, you said the other day that we don’t need to know our blood type because our doctor will check it before doing a transfusion. And yet, you said most Japanese people know their blood type. Why do they pay so much attention to this?
Well, many people in Japan believe that a person’s blood type determines their personality and compatibility with others. It’s similar to horoscopes and zodiac sings in the West. Talking about your blood type can be a conversational icebreaker in Japan. Theories about the supposed influence of blood types are not really based on science, but that doesn’t stop all sorts of well-known people from including their blood types in their profiles.
I see. You said you’re Type A. What kinds of personality traits are you A-type folks supposed to have?
We’re allegedly diligent, well-organized and serious-minded. On the downside, we’re stubborn, near perfectionist, and often stressed-out.
How interesting! That does sound like you, Kyohei. Now, I was told at the blood drive that I’m Type B. What are our supposed personality traits?
In Japan, Type B people are seen as the polar opposite of Type A. They’re thought to be self-centered-in both a positive and negative sense-highly creative, passionate, honest, friendly and outgoing. At the same time, they’re unpredictable and don’t like to follow rules. Of course, it’s up to you whether to believe that or not.
