1.　　starting salary　　初任給


　I took the job because it had a great starting salary.
　初任給がとてもよかったので、その仕事に就きました。


★starting には「始まりに相応しい」というニュアンスがある
　例えば
　「先発ピッチャ」を starting pitcher、「出発点」を starting point
　というように starting には「始めの、開始時点の」という意味がある





2.　　assign　　配属する、任命する


　I got assigned to the Vocabu-rider team.
　私は、ボキャブライダーチームに配属されました。


★assign + 人 to ～ で「人を～に配属する」
　「～で配属される」は、例文のように get assigned to ～
　「配属されている」という状態は be assigned to ～





3.　　ID　　本人証明書、社員証


　Carry your ID with you at all time.
　社員証は常に携帯してください。


★ID ＝ identification「識別、本人証明」を短くしたもの





4.　　shadow　　経験者のそばで学ぶ


　For new employees, it’s helpful to shadow someone with experience.
　新入社員にとって、経験のある人につくことが役に立ちます。


★shadow は、基本的には「影」ですが
　動詞として使うと「影のようについて動く、尾行する」と言う意味
　それが仕事の場では「人の下で仕事のやり方を学ぶ」
　という意味でも使われるようになっています
　「私はマックスさんのもとで大いに学んだ」だと
　I learned a lot shadowing Max.

vegetable-based diets の diet は「日常的に食べるもの、食生活」という意味ですね。

That’s right.　So, when you hear “diet” in English, remember that it doesn’t always mean trying to lose weight.

そうですね、日本語の「ダイエット」とはかなり違う、というわけですね。




What is the substitute ingredient of Kewpie’s egg-free goods?

キューピーの卵を使わない製品の代わりの原材料は何ですか？

Kewpie is famous for its mayonnaise products.　But now the firm have launched a line of egg-free goods that use substitute ingredients such as soy to recreate the taste and texture.

キユーピーはマヨネーズ製品で有名です。 しかしこのほど、その会社は発売しました、一連の卵が入っていない商品を、それは大豆など代わりの材料を使います、味と食感を再現するために。

So the answer to the question is soy.

egg-free goods の -free は「～がない」という意味ですね
alcohol-free や sugar-free などは普段の生活の中でもよく耳にしますよね。

And as more you can put “free” after lots of things.
Hassle-free, worry-free and gender-free are just a few other examples.

感情や概念など、形のないものにも -free をつけて「～がない」という意味で使われるんですね。




In which area will a line of egg-free goods be sold online?

卵を使わない製品は、どの地域でネット販売されるのでしょうか？

It plans to sell them online for Tokyo and surrounding areas before gradually expanding sales across the country.

その会社は、それらをオンラインで販売することを計画しています、東京とその周辺地域で、少しずつ全国に販売を拡大する前に。

So the answer to the question is “in Tokyo and surrounding areas.”

質問の答えは「東京とその周辺地域」でした。




Kagome is best known for ketchup.　The firm has collaborated with a Tokyo start-up to develop an egg-free omelet-and-rice dish.

カゴメはケチャップでもっともよく知られています。　その会社は東京のある新興企業と協力しました、卵が入っていないオムライスを開発するために。

「オムライス」は和製英語ですので、ここでは omelet-and-rice「オムレツとライスが一緒になったもの」と言っていますね。

“Curry-and-rice” follows that same pattern.

「カレーライス」も curry-and-rice なんですね。
このように「～ライス」という料理名は、英語では -and-rice がつくことが多いですね。




Our aim is to provide new options for diverse dietary needs.

dietary は diet の形容詞形で、dietary needs は「食事のニーズ」という意味です
病気の治療で食事療法を行なっている人やスポーツ選手など、個々の事情を考慮した食事へのニーズですね。

Another common phrase is “dietary restrictions”.

dietary restriction「食事制限」は、アレルギーや宗教など、何らかの理由で食べられない、といった時に使います。

When you go out to eat with someone, especially someone you don’t know very well, try asking “Do you have any dietary restrictions?”

「食事の制限はありますか？」という意味の使える表現ですね。




Tom, do you have any dietary restrictions?

Ah, yes.　I can’t eat natto.　But I suppose it’s not really a restriction.　I just don’t like it.

トムさんは、単に納豆嫌いというわけですね。

That’s right.
