おぼえた日記

2014年12月28日(日)

Long ago, people in both the East and the West had only given names.
Little by little, they added family named to their given names.
As a family name, they often used the name of their job.
"James Baker" is an example in England. A baker bakes bread.
Some family names came from the father's name.
"Johnson" means "John's son".
"MacDonald" is "the son of Donald".
In Scottish, "mac" means "son of".
The names of places sometimes became family names, too.
"Leonardo of Vinci".
"Vinci" is the name of a village in Italy.
