From Bike Trail to Bike Kitchen (3)
The city has gotten a lot more crowded over the years, and the trains have become a lot more expensive. Commuting by bike lets you avoid the crowds, save money and get to work on time. New York is part of a booming bike movement across the country, as cities recognize the importance of biking in their transportation systems, invest in bike infrastructure and improve the safety of bike routes.
Urban planners and policymakers are doing everything they can to get more people on likes. Developing better bike infrastructure plays a key role in that, but infrastructure alone isn’t enough. The recent explosion in bike use has led to accidents. That suggests people need to pay more attention to upskilling. During lockdowns, many cities saw big increases in cycling injuries when more people took to their bikes.
Kyohei, were you on your own, or were you part of a group?
I traveled with two students form Albany. I’ve gotten to know them through a local cyclists’ group. We organized our own “sag wagon.” That’s a vehicle that follows behind bicyclists-like in a race-to pick up people who drop out or to carry supplies. Every day, one of us took a turn to drive the car ahead to that day’s destination. The designated driver looked around the town and found a place to stay the night.
So, you didn’t sleep in tents and carry all your food?
Some people do that, but we decided to take advantage of the local hotels and restaurants.
