How to Live to 100 (4)

The earlier we can find healthy ways to deal with life’s inevitable upsets, the better prepared we’ll be if trouble strikes in our 70s or 80s. This means making a conscious, active effort to avoid excessive rumination and unhealthy emotional reactions. I don’t want to be brooding and bitchy in my old age.
People who keep working into their 70s and beyond tend to have better health and stay more socially connected. Staying busy, maintaining social connections and finding meaning and purpose in our daily routine are all part of healthy aging.
And since there’s so much uncertainty about the future, the trend is for people to keep working as long as they can. With companies embracing remote work and flexible hours and the gig economy expanding, it’s easier for many older people to stay employed.
If you find work fulfilling and enjoy the company of your colleagues, you should think seriously about sticking out around retirement age-but be sure to have a plan for your second act. Volunteer, or find paid work somewhere that will keep you active and engaged and give you a reason to get up in the morning.
Everybody should think of meaningful roles they can play in society as they get older. One way to do this is to go back to school. If you look around college campuses today, you see more students who are in their 60s or 70s. They’re finally doing something they’ve always wanted to do.
