**有名なテーブル

アーサー王伝説にある「円卓」the Round Table
上座下座のない円卓を囲んで騎士たちと会合を持った。
現在、
have a round table,
have a round-table meeting
というと、自由に意見を述べ合うopen discussionを持つことを意味する。

**食卓
食事についての言い方
set the table 食器類を並べる
sit at the table テーブルにつく
eat at the table 食事をする
clear the table 片づける

put food on the table 直訳すると「食べ物をテーブルに置く」
比喩的な表現で「食べていく、養う、やりくりする」

My dad had six kids. He worked hard to put food on the table.
父には6人の子どもがいまして、頑張って仕事をして養ってくれました。

**外食

レストランなどの席もtableという。

I'd like a table for two, please. 二人用の積をお願いします。

I booled/reserved a table.

under the table 「テーブルの下に/で」というフレーズにはただならぬイメージがある。

Falstaff will dring all men under the table. フォルスタッフはどんな男も酔いつぶしてしまう。
#人をテーブルの下にへたりこませるというイメージ。

At the end of the party we were all under the table. 会の最後には皆酔いつぶれた。

They got paid under the table. 彼らは袖の下を受け取った。

**討議・交渉の場

tableには「討議の場」という意味もある。
「あるものを検討事項として提出する」ことを次のように表せる。

Bring your project to the table, and we'll discuss it.
君たちの企画を討議事項として出せば、私たちで検討しますよ。

come to the table 「重要な交渉の場に出席する」

We proposed a merger but they won't come to the table.
うちは合併を提案しましたが先方が討議に応じません。

**経営・戦略の裏にも

bring something to the table 「何かをテーブルに持って来る」という表現には、
そのテーブルを通して運営される事業に貢献するという意味合いがある。

What can he bring to the table? 彼はどんな貢献ができますか？

I bring to the table 10 years of experience at a law firm. 私は法律事務所での10年間の経験を生かしています。

**ボードゲームより

turn the tables 「（主語にとって）有利な立場に逆転する」イディオム　#tables と複数になっていることに注意

ここでのtableはボードゲームの別称。
相手が勝っている状態のtableを回すとこちらが有利になるという、一挙に形勢逆転するというイメージ。
不利になった相手をon以下で表す。

In the last episode of "Champs," Mr. Loss turned the table on Mr. Win.
前回の「王者」では、ミスター・ロスがミスター・ウィンと形勢を逆転しました。

よく受動態で
The tables are turned.
と使われる。

turn over the table 「テーブルをひっくり返す」とはアクションがまるで違うので注意。

**カードゲームより

put/lay (all) one's cards on the table 「自分のカード（全て）をテーブルに置く」
は、相手に計画や意向などを包み隠さず正直に知らせる、ということ。

I decided to put/lay my cards on the table and said I wasn't joining the club.
私は本音を言おうと決めて、クラブには入らないと言いました。

If you put/lay all your cards on the table, we'll be ready to negotiate.
御社の意向をすべてオープンにしてもらえば、うちは交渉に応じますが。

会話例

A: Machi, come sit at the table and watch TV with me.
B: Okay, Dad. Oh, that's Peacock.
A: Yes, last week Arimorty laid all his cards on the table about PlanX.
B: You're right. But he escaped them, didn't he?
A: Right. And now he's cornered Peacock!
B: The tables are turned. What? "To be continued"?
A: That was quick.

Le gouvernement portugais a mis en place des mesures fiscales pour attirer les retraités.

彼らを引き付けるため、ポルトガル政府は、税制上の措置を講じました。

Et comme toujours, les seniors français apprécient le soleil, la bonne cuisine, les pris plus bas qu'en France.

そしていつものとおり、フランスのシニアたちは太陽に、おいしい料理に、フランスより安い物価に目がないのです。

Et la proximité de la France leur permet de rentrer aisément dans leur famille.

それにフランスからは近いので、簡単に家族のもとに帰ることだってできるのです。
