Free Cafeterias Help Poor Children

Japanese citizens’ groups have encouraged people across the country to join an initiative that helps feed children living in poverty. The initiative is known as “ kodomo shokudo, ” or “ children’s cafeteria. ” The cafeterias provide food for free, or at a low cost.
It’s a movement that’s spreading nationwide. More than 500 people came to a recent seminar that teaches them how to set up to their own cafeterias. The event was held in Chiba, a city east of Tokyo.
In a panel discussion, representatives of groups that operate similar services shared their experiences. “ I hope many people participate in this movement,” one representative said. “ And I hope that local communities become involved.”
A government survey found one out of six children in Japan lived in poverty in 2012. Originally intended to help poor children, most such cafeterias are now open to any child and their family members. The movement has helped children form a strong bond with other children and people in their communities.

I had no idea that one out of six children in Japan lived in poverty. That’s a really sobering statistic.

伊藤先生：　
It is. What is the rate of child poverty in Amerika ? Do you know ?

Hannahさん：　
I believe it is currently a little worse, I’m afraid — about one in four children. So it’s really important, I think, to support programs like this that fight child hunger. There is a charity initiative in America that is known as “ No Kid Hungry. ” that is also working to fight child hunger.

伊藤先生：　
It’s so good to be aware of these kinds of programs so that we can support them. Even just a little bit of volunteer work or financial aid makes a big difference.
