Lyons recalls what a high school teacher used to say about the importance of asking questions.
And McMillan says it’s a vital part of learning.
Lyons says American schools should focus more on teaching soft skills or twenty-first century skills.
He says the different people would find twenty-first century skills in different ways, but that he thinks of three core skill sets.



◆skill set　スキルセット、スキル一式



◆bring something to the table　～を提供する、～を持ってくる

Lyons means bring something that would be a benefit, provide something that would be a benefit.
If I say “ This new computer model doesn’t bring anything new to the table ”, then it doesn’t offer any particularly innovative features or benefits, for example.

bring something to the table 「何かを机の上に載せる」という意味ですけれど、議論のためのテーマや提案を持ってくる、ということですね。
あるいは、もっと広くとらえて、何らかの技能や知識、知見などを持ってくる、という意味でもう使います。
就職の面談の中でですね、What can you bring to the table ? と言えばですね、「あなたはどんな知識、どんな経験をこの会社に持ってくることができますか？」という意味ですね。
bring someone to the table と言えば、「交渉のテーブルにつかせる」という意味でもあります。

◆cliché　決まり文句、陳腐な表現



◆There really is no such thing as a stupid question ― only stupid answers.
　実際は愚かな質問などない、あるのは愚かな答えだけだ。

Basically, this means it’s always good to ask questions to make sure there is no misunderstanding or confusion, or to increase our knowledge.
Let’s say I’m embarrassed to ask about economics concept, you know, I don’t want to see me ignorant.
You tell me, “ No, come on, there’s no such things as a stupid question.　Ask away. ”

　★ignorant　無知の、無学の
　★ask away　どんどん聞く

日本語でも「聞くは一時の恥、聞かぬは一生の恥」なんて言いますね。



◆I couldn’t agree more.　まったく同感だ。

Grace completely agrees in other words.
We also have the expression “ couldn’t care less ”, which means we don’t care at all.
She couldn’t care less about her career, so she has no concern for her career.
And we also use “ could care less ” in exactly the same way, even though grammatically that sounds wrong, doesn’t it.
But if I say “ I could care less what other people think, ” then I mean I don’t care at all what other people think.

これは強い同意の表現ですね。
I agree entirely.　I agree completely. ということです。



◆conventional wisdom　世間一般の通念

This is what the majority of people belief, of a commonly accepted belief about something.
We often use this expression when we think the common belief is not true.
For example, I want to ？？？ an article that read conventional wisdom says extrovert people are the best salesman, but according to a new study, apparently this is not a true.

◆think for oneself　自分で考える

Think and reach conclusions all alone, you know, not rely on other people’s reasoning.
Things like, “ My professor’s encouraged me to think for myself to analyze, not just to repeat the fact that I’ve read in books. ”
Or you could say, “ He always agrees with his boss, always.　He never thinks for himself. ”

　★reasoning　推理、推論、論法、議論の筋道



◆place emphasis on ～　　～に重点を置く、～を重視する

Lyons says American schools should place more emphasis on teaching soft skills.



◆soft skills　ソフトスキル
　協調性やコミュニケーション能力など、数字では測りにくいスキル

Soft skills are things that can’t be easily quantified.
Like, communication skills are socially intelligence.
Unlike, hard skills which you can quantify like a person’s aptitude with computers or their knowledge of accounting.

　★aptitude　素質、才能、適性
　★quantify　～を数量化する、数値で表す

hard skills といえば、簿記1級とか、柔道三段とか、数字で表すことのできるもの、ですね。

◆depend on who you ask　聞く相手によって

Lyons says down at the bottom, “ You’ll probably get different answers to that question depending on who you ask. ”



◆prospective　有望な、見込みのある



◆core　中心的な、核となる



◆come to mind　頭に浮かぶ、思いつく

Appear one’s thought.
You could ask a person, “ What comes to mind when you think of Japan ?　You know, so ？？？ what is your impression of Japan ? ”
Or a company could survey its customers : What comes to mind when you think about our products ?　Low prices, good quality ?
Or we also say “ jump to mind ” which means quickly appear in one’s thoughts.
When Helen asked if I could recommend someone for the job, you immediately jump to mind.

jump to mind 「すぐに思いつく」ということですね。
あるいは、spring to mind ともいいますね。



◆critical thinking　批判的思考力



◆collaboration　協調、協力、協業

This is another way to say cooperation.
To use the verb, two auto companies collaborated on a selective car.




◆be of the same mind　同じ意見・考えである
