The Taliban, the Islamist group that rules Afghanistan, last December ordered universities around the country to suspend education for women.
Some members of the Taliban are strongly opposed to female education and employment. The group suspended secondary education for girls after retaking control of Afghanistan in August 2021. Girls can now only attend elementary schools.
The international community quickly condemned the latest step. U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres said in a statement that the denial of education will "have a devastating impact on the country's future."
