Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) and Paul Gauguin (1848-1903), Post-Impressionist masters active at the end of the 19th century, met in Paris in 1887 when they were still fledgling painters and became intimate friends immediately. They decided to live together in Arles, southern France, in 1888. They were strongly inspired by each other, experimenting with and influencing each other's techniques. However, while they associated closely and shared an intimate relationship as artists, their companionship eventually became frosty due to differences in artistic sensibilities and personalities. After all, their joint living arrangement ended after only two months.
