Asuka: As a phonetician, I am really excited to listen to the news as I am interested in sounds in general. What do you think about today's story?

Tom: Well, more than anything, I was surprised to hear that researchers had the idea of putting microphones up to tomatoes. It makes you wonder what other plants might make sounds.

Asuka: It sure does. In today's story, the sounds made by tomatoes are described as the tomato’s “voice.” I think this is a very interesting way of describing the “sounds.” Do you regard them as language or just the sounds of tomatoes?

Tom: I'm not sure! But when you think of something “speaking a language,” it gives the thing a kind of human quality — and that makes you more sympathetic to it, I think. I'll probably feel a little guilty the next time I pick a tomato or accidentally snap a twig and it “cries out” in pain.
