Russian athletes banned from Olympics for 2 years -NHK WORLD-JAPAN- 3 hours ago

The Court of Arbitration for Sport has banned Russian athletes from competing in major international events under their country's name for two years. It means Russian athletes cannot take part in the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games next year nor the 2022 Beijing Winter Games.

The World Anti-Doping Agency decided in December last year to ban Russian athletes from the Olympics, World Championships and other major competitions for four years. Russia filed an appeal with Switzerland-based CAS. The court on Thursday rejected the Russian 's arguments, but halved the period of the ban.

The Russian side can appeal to the Swiss supreme court.

Although Russian athletes will be excluded from both the Tokyo and Beijing Games, athletes who fulfill strict conditions will be able to compete as individually qualified neutral athletes.
