Researchers: More analysis needed on variant risks -NHK WORLD-JAPAN -13 hours ago
Researchers in Japan say further is needed to determine whether the coronavirus variant first found in Britain puts patients at greater risk of developing serious symptoms.
A team led by researchers from the National Center for Global Health and Medicine analyzed the conditions of 110 hospitalized patients infected with coronavirus variants. The study was conducted from December to March.
The highly transmissible British variant was found in 105 patients. Six of them were placed in an intensive care unit or put on a ventilator. One of them died.
The six patients in serious condition included one each in their 40s and 50s, both of whom were overweight. The other four were in their 70s and 80s, with underlying health issues such as Kidney or heart disease and cerebral infarction.
Researchers at the center said the risks posed by the variant remain unclear because the findings are interim results and the study covered only a small number of patients. They added that conventional treatments seem effective.
The director of the Disease Control and Prevention Center, Ohmagari Norio, stressed the importance of reducing new infections, because there is no doubt that the variant is highly transmissible.
