☆ The Art of Small Talk (雑談力)

A: I have accumulated a few stories since arriving here in the U.S. A couple of months ago I had a nagging headache that just wouldn’t go away.

私は、ここアメリカに来てから、話のネタをいくつか集めてきました。2、3ヶ月前ですが、しつこい頭痛を抱えていて、とにかく治らなかったのです。

I might have COVID-19, so HRD referred me to a
clinic nearby. When I got there, the receptionist
gave me a sheet of paper and asked me to write down my complaint.
新型コロナウイルス感染症にかかったかもしれないと思った私に、人材開発部が近くのクリニックを紹介してくれました。そこに行くと、受
付の人が一枚の紙をくれて、complaint を記入し
て下さいと言ったのです。

When I told her I didn’t have one, she seemed irritated and insisted that I write anything I could think of.
私が何もないと言うと、彼女はイライラした様
子で、何でも考えつくものを書くようにと強く言いました。

B: Oh, I think I know where this is headed.
ああ、その先はわかるような気がします。

A: Right, when I got home and looked up “complaint” in my dictionary, I realized she’d been referring to my medical condition.
そうなのです、帰宅してcomplaint を辞書で調べた時に気づきました。彼女は私の病状について
言っていたということに。

I felt really embarrassed, because I’d written that my complaint was that the receptionist wasn’t very friendly.〔Laughter 〕
本当に恥ずかしいと思いました。というのも、
私のcomplaint は、受付の人があまり親切ではないことだ、と書いてきたからです。〔笑い〕
