He was in the wheelchair.
Candy barked but he didn't notice.
"Chris! I'm here! I came to see you! Come back!"
Two of the guards were approaching.
Charo caught Candy by the tail and tugged.
"Hey! What are you doing?"
"They are coming to get us. Let's go."
Charo led Candy out to the alley. Candy kept crying all the way.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make you cry, but..."
"I know. We had to leave anyway. It was the best choice."
"Candy."
"You don't have to apologize. You did the right thing for both of us. But I just wanted to be with Chris. I just..."
Candy kept crying and crying. Until finally she calm down.
"At least I got a quick look at him today... And I can always try again tomorrow."
"Of course."
"Hey, Charo. Would you come to the dog show with me this weekend?"
"Dog show?"
"I really don't want to go, but if a friend could join me, it wouldn't be that bad."
"Yes, sure. I can go with you."
Candy brightened up. Charo was happy, too.
It'll never happen again.
