Japanese journalist reportedly detained -NHK WORLD-JAPAN 1 hour ago
Witnesses in Myanmar said that Japanese journalist Kitazumi Yuki has been taken into custody. They said on Sunday night security forces took him from his home in Yangon.
The Japanese embassy in Myanmar lost contact with Kitazumi and has been trying to confirm his whereabouts.
About 3 hours before witnesses saw Kitazumi being taken from his home, he posted a message on social media and linked a video about Myanmar and Japanese monks praying for a martyr at a temple in Tokyo.
The Journalist was briefly detained by police in February while covering pro-democracy protests.
In Myanmar, various protests have been staged against the military junta as security forces continue to crackdown on demonstrators . A local human rights group says that as of Sunday, security forces have killed at least 737 people.
Recently, pro-democracy politicians including ousted members of parliament announced the formation of a National Unity Government. This includes Aung San Suu Kyi, leaders of anti-coup protests and ethnic minorities.
The NUG has called for international recognition as the legitimate authority
However, the military designated it as an illegal organization and may intensify their armed crackdown.
