Traffic through Suez Canal resumes -NHK WORLD-JAPAN 57 min ago

Shipping traffic through Egypt's Suez Canal has resumed after workers managed to free a huge container ship that was blocking it.

Osama Rabie, chairman of the Suez Canal Authority, told reporters that the waterway reopened at 6 p.m. on Monday, local time.

The ship got stuck in the key waterway last Tuesday. It is owned by Shoei Kisen, based in the western Japanese prefecture of Ehime, and is operated by a Taiwanese company.

The authority led efforts to refloat the vessel. Following days of dredging and tugging, the ship was finally frees shortly after 3 p.m.

Video from the authority shows the freed container ship moving slowly along the canal.

Rabie said the blockage left 422 vessels stranded in or around the canal while waiting to pass through. The chairman pledged around-the -clock efforts to resolve the impact on logistics as soon as possible.
