The person on the new five-thousand-yen bill
Japan will have new bills this year. The people on the bills will change. The five-thousand-yen bill will be Tsuda Umeko. Do you know who she is? Tsuda was really amazing. She was one of the first Japanese female students to study in the U.S. In 1871, when she left Japan, she was only six years old. Can you believe that? She lived and studied in the U.S. until she was 17. When she came back, she became an educator. She founded a women’s school and helped improve the status of women. If you’d like to learn more about Tsuda, there are some books about her in the school library.
