When I came to Spain, and for some time afterwards, I was not only uninterested in the political situation but unaware of it. I knew there was a war on, but I had no notion what kind of a war. If you had asked me why I had joined the militia I should have answered: 'To fight against Fascism,' and if you had asked me what I was fighting for, I should have answered: 'Common decency.' I had accepted the News Chronicle - New Statesman version of the war as the defence of the civilization against a maniacal outbreak by an army of Colonel Blimps in the pay of Hitler.
スペインへやってきた当初から、その後しばらくのあいだ私は、政治的状況というものにさっぱり興味がもてなかったばかりではなく、それを気にもとめ.' でいた。戦争が行なわれていることは知っていたが、それがどんな性格の戦争なのか、まるっきり知らなかったのだ。君はなぜ義勇軍に入隊したのか、ときかれたら、私は「ファシズムと戦うために」と答えただろうし、君は何のために戦うのか、ときかれたら、私は「人間共通の品位のために」と答えただろう。この戦争を、ヒトラーに雇われた頑迷な職業軍人(コロネル・プリンプス)の一団が引き起こしたきちがいじみた暴動に反対して、文明を擁護するために起こったものとみる、「ニューズ・クロニクル」紙[「ザ・デイリー・ニューズ」紙や「ザ・デイリー・クロニクル」紙が中核となり、いくつかの新聞が合併して一九三〇年にできた自由党系の新聞。 一九六〇年、「デイリー・メール」紙に併合された]や、「ニュース・ステイツマン」誌[一九一三年創刊されたイギリスの週刊誌。一九三一年、「ザ・ネーション・アンド・アシニアム」と合併してからは「ザ・ニュース・ステイツマン・アンド・ネーション」と改題した。労働党左派系]的解釈を、私はそのまま受け容れていた。
The revolutionary atmosphere of Barcelona had attached me deeply, but I had made no attempt to understand it. As for the kaleidoscope of political of political parties and trade unions, with their tiresome names - P.S.U.C., P.O.U.M., F.A.I., C.N.T., U.G.T., J.C.I., J.S.U., A.I.T., - they merely exasperated me. It looked at first sight as though Spain were suffering a plague of initials. I knew that I was serving in something called the P.0.U.M.(I had only joined the P.O.U.M.militia rather than any other because I happened to arrive in Barcelona with I.L.P. papers. but I did not realize that there were serious differences between the political parties. At Monte Pocero, when they pointed the position on our left and said;
私はバルセロナの革命的雰囲気には深く心を引かれたけれど、それを理解しようとする努力は何もしなかった。「PSUC」「POUM」「FAI」「CNT」「UGT」「JCI」「JSU」「AIT」といった ー まったくもってうんざりするような名前の連続だ ー 変幻きわまりない政党と労働組合の万華鏡(まんげきょう)については、私はただ、いらいらするばかりだった。ちょっと見たとき、スペインは流行性頭文字(イニシャル)病にでもかかっているのかな、という気がした。自分がPOUMとかいうグループの一員になっていることは知っていたが(それというのも、たまたまイギリス独立労働党(ILP)の紹介状をもらってバルセロナへやってきたために、ほかの義勇軍ではなくてPOUM義勇軍へ入隊した、というだけなのだ)、各政党間には大きなちがいがある、ということは、私にはピンとこなかった。ポケロ山で、連中が左手の陣地を指して
'Those are the Socialists'(meaning the P.S.U.C.), I was puzzled and said: 'Arn't we all socialists?' I thought it idiotic that people fighting for their lives should have separate parties; my attitude always was, 'Why can't we drop all this political nonsense and get on with the war?' This of course was the correct 'anti-Fascist' attitude always which had been carefully disseminated by the English newspapers, largely in order to prevent people from grasping the real nature of the struggle. But in Spain, especially Catalonia, it was an attitude that no one could or did keep up indefinitely. Everyone, however unwillingly, took sides sooner or later. For even if one cared nothing for the political parties and their conflicting 'lines', it was too obvious that one's own destiny was involved. As a militiaman one was a solder against Franco, but one was also a pawn in an enormous struggle that was being fought out between two political theories. When I scrounged for firewood on the mountainside and wondered whether this was really a war or whether the News Chronicle had made it up, when I dodged the Communist machine-guns in the Barcelona riots, when I finally fled from Spain with the police one jump behind me - all these things happened to me in that particular way because I was serving in the P.O.U.M. militia and not in the P.S.U.C. So great is the difference between two sets of initials!
「あそこは社会主義者たち(PSUCを指すのだが)の陣地だ」と教えてくれたとき、私はめんくらって「だって、われわれはみんな社会主義者じゃないのか？」ときき返したものだった。生命(いのち)を守るために戦っている人間たちが、それぞれ別の党派を持たなければいけないなんてばかげている、という気がしたのだ。「なぜわれわれはこんな政治的ナンセンスをぜんぶふり捨てて、戦争をどんどん遂行することができないのだろう？」というのが、いつもの私の姿勢だった。これが、おもに一般の人びとにこの戦争の本質を知らせないようにするため、英国の新聞によってわざと広められていた正しい「反ファシスト的姿勢」であったことは、いうまでもない。しかし、スペインの、とりわけカタロニア地方では、だれもそんな姿勢をいつまでも持ち続けることはできなかったし、また事実、持ち続けなかった。たとえ気が進まなくても、すべての人が早晩、自分の態度を決めたのだった。というのは、政党やその矛盾し合う「路線」についてちっとも興味がもてなくても、それが自分自身の運命にかかわることは、あまりにも明らかだったからだ。だれにしても、一義勇兵としてはフランコと戦う兵士だったが、同時に、二つの政治理論のあいだで闘われている巨大な戦いにおける歩(ふ)でもあった。ポケロ山の中腹で薪あさりをしながら、いったいこれがほんとうの戦争なのか、それとも「ニューズ・クロニクル」紙がでっちあげたものなのか、と首をかしげていたとき、またバルセロナの暴動で共産主義者の機関銃から身をかわしたとき、あるいはまた、間一髪で警察の手を逃れ、ようやくスペインから脱出したときのことをふり返ってみると ー こうしたことが、すべてあのような独特な形で私の身にふりかかってきたのは、私がPSUC軍ではなくて、POUM軍に入隊したためだったのだ。となると、二組の頭文字(イニシャル)の相違は何と大きいのだろうか！
To understand the alignment on the Government side one has got to remember how the war started. When the fighting broke out on 18 July every anti-Fascist in Europe felt a thrill of hope.
政府側の戦列態勢を理解するためには、この戦争がどのようにして起こったか、を思い返してみなければならない。七月十八日に戦闘が勃発したとき、ヨーロッパのファシズムに反対するすべての人びとは、おそらくわくわくするような希望を感じたことであろう。
