Summary

Grace says millennials need things like dinner parties which are a chance to enjoy the company of physically-present people over a good meal. Salmans describes how the expansion of restaurant culture caused fewer dinner parties to be held at people's homes, but says now the custom is coming back. Salmans says services like the one Ueda uses exist in cities all of the world.





Collins: These special semantic dinners give people a chance to enjoy delicious gourmet fare and make new friends.

Grace: There's a crying need for this sort of thing among techie millennials. Most of the social interactions they have over the course of an average day are via their smartphone. So it makes for a refreshing change to enjoy the company of flesh-and-blood people over a nice meal.

Collins: It use to be that the home dinner party was a fixture of the American social scene. It was a way of getting close to people and making them feel like they were part of the family — and women were expected to show off their domestic skills by being the perfect hostess at a dinner party, especially if the boss and his wife were the guest.

Salmans: Yes, that's the way it was not so long ago. But with the huge growth in restaurant culture, the time-honored custom of dinner party became less popular. Now we're seeing a resurgence of this custom. Smart young entrepreneurs sense a demand for an old-fashioned dinner parties among Millennials. There are similar services in cities all over the world.

Ueda: That makes sense when you think about all the other industries that radically transformed in the last few years.
