Lesson 10 A Dinner Party with Strangers (4)

Collins says the man's experience overseas inspired him to set up a business where chefs can serve meals wherever they want and customer can try new foods and make friends. Salmans wonders what would happen if the other guests were all uninteresting and asks Ueda what kind of people were at his party. Ueda says they were an event coordinator, a librarian, a police reporter and dietitian.

Ueda: Cool! I like the idea of meeting local people while traveling and enjoying the local cuisine. That's much more interesting than eating in touristy restaurants all the time.

Collins: I agree. So the home-cooked meal in Guatemala inspired him to set up a business. Chefs can serve meals wherever and whenever they want, and customers can have new dining experiences and make new friends.

Ueda: That all sounds good. But what is the business model?

Collins: Operators of these services split the fees that guests pay with the chefs.

Salmans: Okay, it sounds good in theory. But I guess the wild card is who your fellow diners will be. What happens if there are a bunch of dullards, or people you find obnoxious in some way? How were your fellow diners, Shota?

Ueda: I was lucky, I guess. They were an interesting bunch. I hope they found me interesting too. One man was an event coordinator and his wife was a librarian. There was a reporter who covers the police beat on one of the big dailies, and a dietitian. We compared notes on our professions and discovered that the police reporter and the event organizer had the most stressful jobs.

Viewed freely, the English language is the accretion and growth of every dialect, race, and range of time and is both the free and compacted composition of all. —Walt Whitman (U.S. Poet, Essayist and Journalist)
「率直に評価すると、英語はあらゆる方言、民族、時代が融合して発達したもので゜ある。全てが自由かつ簡潔に構成されたものである」

accretion: (発育・付着・包含などによる)増大
dialect: 方言
range of time: 時間の範囲
