WHO team inspects Wuhan seafood market -NHK WORLD-JAPAN 11 hours ago
A team of experts from World Health Organization staying in the Chinese city of Wuhan has visited the seafood market that was at the center of the world's first major outbreak of the coronavirus.
The team, consisting of international experts from Japan and elsewhere, visited the site on Sunday afternoon. The visit was part of an inspection that began on Friday with the aim of identifying the origins of the pandemic.
Chinese health officials had indicated the virus may have come from the market's wildlife section.
The market is surrounded by a 3-meter fence and was closed to foreign media after being shut down in January last year.
Earlier o Sunday, the WHO team visited another market that the government touts as an example of its successful initial efforts to fight the virus. It says the market started supplying food to residents in February last year, soon after the city's lockdown began.
The team as on Saturday visited an exhibition showcasing what the government portrays as a successful containment effort.
The government appears to be trying to justify the actions it took, and to counter international criticism that its initial response to the coronavirus was slow.
