◆TEST FOR FACE SCANNING PAYMENT　顔認証支払い実験

A Japanese banking group is testing a system that allows users to make payments by having their faces scanned, eliminating the need for cash or cards.
日本の金融グループが、利用者の顔をスキャンすることで支払いができるシステムを実験している。このシステム（の実用化）によって、現金やクレジットカードが不要になる。
Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group plans to test out the system for two months at a cafeteria of one of its group firms.
三井住友フィナンシャルグループは、社員食堂で、そのシステムの実証実験を２か月にわたって行う予定だ。

An electronics company helped develop the technology. A camera linked to a vending machine will scan the faces of workers and match them with those in a pre-registered database. Payments would then be withdrawn from their salaries.
Biometric identification is becoming increasingly popular among financial institutions.

Sumitomo Mitsui believes facial recognition is speedier and protects against identity theft more effectively than using fingerprints or palm veins. The banking group expects the system to be especially useful at places such as sports clubs, where people may prefer not to carry cash or cards.

Japanese restaurant owners are frustrated by foreign tourists who make reservations and then don't show up.
日本の飲食店の経営者らが、予約をしておきながら姿を見せない外国人旅行者に困っている。
The operator of a leading online dining website has come up with what it hopes is a solution.
Gurunavi will require overseas visitors to use their credit cards to make advance deposits when they book a table.
「ぐるなび」では、外国人旅行者が飲食店のテーブルを予約する時点で、クレジットカードで事前に決済するようになった。

It will introduce the system in cooperation with two tour companies in China and Taiwan. Gurunavi says the deposits are not refundable even if customers cancel their reservations in advance.
A restaurateur in Tokyo's Ginza district that's listed on the website says foreign tourists who make reservations online are sometimes no-shows.

"Cancellation without notice will cause food waste. We also have to save the seats for the reservations, when we could serve other customers."
