〇The Little Green Monster 「緑色の獣」（６）
If I had known this was going to happen, I could have stayed by the door and cut the nose off, I told myself: The kitchen had plenty of sharp knives. No sooner had the thought occurred to me than the creature moved past the edge of the door, smiling, as if it had read my mind. Then it spoke, not with a stutter, but repeating certain words as if it were still trying to learn them. It wouldn’t have done you any good, any good, the little green monster said. My nose is like a lizard’s tail. It always grows back-stronger and longer, stronger and longer. You'd get just the opposite of what what you want want. Then it spun its eyes for a long time, like two weird tops.

もし…を知っていたら、ドアのところに残り….していただろう。仮定法過去完了

その考えが私に浮かぶとすぐに、その生物は動いた　
no sooner ～than… ～するとすぐに…した。
～の一節が過去完了時制、…の節が過去時制が原則で、さらにNo soonerが文頭に来るとhad the thought occurred のように倒置される。
It would't have done you any good そうしてもいいことは何もないよ　
not do ～any goodまったく役に立たない　
spun spinの過去形　ぐるぐる回した　tops 独楽

どうせこうなるならナイフを持ってドアのそばにいて、あの鼻先をすっぱりと切り落としてやればよかったのにと私は思った。私は台所によく切れるナイフをいっぱい揃えているのだ。でも獣は私の考えを見すかす様に、にやにや笑いを浮かべた。

Y: (留守電）やあ、アスカちゃん、ユキチです。アドバイスをありがとう。整髪料を使わなくなってからも勉強し続けてきた。
Hi , Asuka-chan, this is Yukichi . Thanks for your advice. I kept studying after I stopped using the hair wax.
それでね！きょうね、前に受けた別の模試の結果が帰ってきたんだ。
Guess what! Today, I received a report from another practice exam I took.
点数が前回よりすごく上がっていて、キソエイ高校の合格点に届きそうなくらいなんだ！ぼく、とてもうれしい・・・じゃあ！
This score is much higher than the last one, almost reaching the passing score for Kisoei High!
A:わーユキチ・・・・。順調にいっているわ。私もとりあえずこのままにしておこうっと。
Wow, Yukichi. Things are going well. I guess I'll let things go for now.

◆Can-do 物や人を比較し意見や説明できる
点数が前回よりすごく上がっていて、キソエイ高校の合格点に届きそうなくらいなんだ！
This score is much higher than the last one, almost reaching the passing score for Kisoei High!
☑比較級のhigher than…をmuchが修飾しています。これで「（点数が）ずっと上がっている」という強調の意味になります。
☑the last oneはthe last scoreの繰り返しを避けています。

◆Grammar
彼は何か別のことを言いたかったようです。
It seems like he wanted to tell me something else.
seemは「～であるように思える」という意味で、次のように人を主語にしたりitを主語にしたりできる。
例）He seems to be happy.(彼はうれしそうです。）
　　 It seems that he is happy.
アメリカ英語ではseem thatの代わりに「seem like＋節」を使うことが、特に口語ではよくあります。　またSeems like…のようにitが落ちることもあります。

◆動詞seemの活用
１．彼女は楽しそうです。　She seems happy.
２．彼はいい人そうです。　He seems a nice man.
３．彼は日本語が話せないみたいです。　It seems (that) he cannot speak Japanese.
４．彼らは楽しんでいるようです。　They seems to have a good time.
５．いい考えのように思えます。It seems like a good idea.
「seem＋形容詞」（１）「seem＋名詞」（２）が基本形。「seem to＋動詞の原形」（４）の形もよく使います
that節をともなう（３）、その変形がIt seems like…(5)です
