A year into the current Israel-Hamas conflict, concern is shifting to the situation across the broader Middle East. Monday's anniversary came with many hostages still unaccounted for, and people struggling with the grave humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Ceasefire talks remain stalled.
Hamas mounted a large-scaled surprise attack on Israel on October 7 last year. It killed about 1,200 people and took about 250 others hostage. Around 100 are still being held.
The Israeli military has been pounding Gaza to destroy Hamas and free the remaining hostages. Negotiations have been gridlocked due to wide rifts between both sides.
"We desperately need a ceasefire. We are exhausted and have reached our limit."
Health officials in Gaza have reported nearly 41,900 deaths since the conflict broke out. About 90 percent of the 2 million residents are estimated to have been displaced. Meanwhile, the Israeli military is also fighting in Lebanon against the Iran-backed Shia Muslim group Hezbollah.

Well, "gridlock" is a combination of 2 words: "grid" and "lock." Do you know what "grid" means, Naomi? Yeah*3. So, basically, a "grid" is a pattern of vertical and horizontal lines crossing. So if you think about it, it kind of looks like the map of roads. NY Cityの地図 Um-hum, so keep that picture in mind, OK? So, next, "lock" has a lot of meanings, but the basic idea is something that stops something else from moving ― so there's no movement; everything is stopped. Exactly. Now put those 2 together and you get a "grid of roads" where "nothing is moving." That's "gridlock." And here's an interesting piece of information: experts say the word "gridlock" first appeared around 1980. So it's less than 50 years old. 比較的新しい使い方 That's right.

◇Hmm...For as long as I can remember, I've been hearing about Israel, Gaza, Hamas, Hezbollah, and conflict in the Middle East. So, I just hope that something can break the gridlock and put the conflict on the course to resolution.
