(24)大気汚染の原因
Air pollution can be divided into several types. The most noticeable type of pollutant is the tiny particle, since many millions of these particles flow out in the smoke from the world’s millions of homes and factories.
Wherever we look, we seem to see smoke. And in the smoke will be found tiny particles of such things as carbon and soot, oil and even metals of various types. If these tiny particles are heavy enough, they will fall to earth and begin their work of soiling furniture, clothing, and faces. If they do not fall, they will remain in the air until they are blown away, making it difficult to see distant objects.
But smoke is not the only source of these particles. Some industries, and even a housewife shaking a dustcloth, throw particles into the air. When tiny drops of sea water rise from the ocean and dry in the air, they leave behind very minute particles of salt.
We also get particles from outer space. Two million pounds of stone and metal particles fall on the earth each year.
Growing plants give off gases that may change to form tiny liquid particles in the air. If you have ever seen a thin fog forming in a forest of trees, you have seen the result of this.

空気を汚染する物質はいくつかのタイプに分類できる。一番目立つタイプの汚染物質は非常に微細な粒子である。この種の無数の粒子が世界中の非常に多くの家庭や工場から煙となって流れ出すからである。
我々はどこを見ても煙が見えるように思えるし、煙の中には炭素やすす、石油、さらにさまざまなタイプの金属さえ微粒子として見られるだろう。これらの微粒子に十分な重さがある場合は、地上に降ってきて、家具や衣服や顔を汚すという仕事が始まることになるし、落ちてこなければ風で吹き飛ばされるまで空中に留まって離れたものを見るのを困難にすることになる。
しかし、煙だけがこれらの微粒子の原因ではない。工業の中には微粒子を空中に排出するものもあるし、それは雑巾を振る家庭の主婦でも同じである。海水の微小な水滴が大洋から上昇して空中で蒸発するときも、後に塩の微粒子を残す。
宇宙空間からの粒子もある。毎年200万ポンドの石と金属の粒子が地上に降ってくる。成長する植物から出る気体は形を変えて空中で液体の微粒子になることがある。森林の中で薄い霧ができていくところを見たことがあれば、この結果を見たことがあることになる。

YouTube動画などでは中国を旅行してきた人間が日本に来ると空が澄んでいるという感想をもらしていたのがありましたが、実際はどうなのでしょうか。昔は光化学スモッグ注意報などが日本でも出ていましたが、最近は聞かなくなりましたね。

最近、霧は見たことがありませんが、高原などに行くと深い霧に包まれたことがあります。
ただただ不思議な現象ととらえていました。
宇宙からも物凄い量がやって来るのですね。
