When I was in America I experienced a form of behavior I detected. Sometimes, when people were in the wrong they would not admit it and Instead act as if they were entitled to be angry.
For example, they would claim, wholly unreasonably, that they hadn’t been given enough time　(when they had previously accepted the time frame) or that the assignment was unclear(when it had been amply explained). I didn’t know how to deal with this and didn’t even understand how it could happen. Then I learned that the Japanese expression gyaku-gire is used when someone realizes they are in the wrong but tries to confuse the situation by acting like he is the wronged party.

アメリカにいたとき、僕は行動様式をみつけては学んだ。　人は時々、間違ったことをしたときそれを認めず、代りに怒る権利を与えられたかのようにふるまった。たとえば、十分な時間が与えられていなかったこと(あらかじめ時間枠は受け入れていた)や、仕事の割り振りが不明確なこと (それは十分説明されていた)を、全く不当だと彼らは主張する。僕はこれに対処する方法を知らなかったし、どうしてそれが起こったかも理解していなかった。それで、間違っていたことに気づき、それを不当に扱われた一団のように演じて、混乱させようとするときに日本語表現で「逆ギレ」を使うことを覚えた。

　　One of my fellow students of Japanese had a joke he loved. He would recite all the different translations his dictionary listed for the word yappari. It could mean: however, yes, no, I am not sure, be a hesitation word …and so on. It is a word whose meaning is very slippery and dependent on context. I use it when I am not sure what to say. If, for example, a friend is talking about all the trouble he has with his girlfriend, it is very dangerous to say “yes, she’s awful” but also he does’t want you to belittle his problems. And you also can’t say nothing at all. The perfect response is to say “yappari”, keep your face neutral and let him think it means what he wants.

日本人の学生仲間の一人は、ジョーク好きだった。彼は、彼の辞書に異なる翻訳を列挙し”yappari”単語を一覧にした。　つまり： ただし、その通り、違う、分からない、ためらった言葉などである。 それは、非常に変り易く（語彙の？）、脈絡に依存するような単語だ。僕は、何と言っていいかわからないとき、それを使う。　たとえば、もし、友人が彼のガール フレンドとあらゆる問題について話している場合、「そう、彼女はひどい」と言うのは、非常に危険だし、また彼はあなたに彼の問題を軽視してほしくもない。そしてあなたもまた、何も言うことができない。完璧な応答は「やっぱり」と言い、中立の顔をして、それは望んでいることなのかどうかを彼に考えさせることだ。（つづく）

・強い同意を表すときにも使えます．

「本当にいっしょに来たいですか？」「絶対です。」
☑I almost forget to breathe.
息をするのを忘れそうです。
