Recently I occasionally listen to "modern English" learned from the news after listening once, I thought it was interesting.
The news theme in the course on April 20 was "Cooking oil price spike hits Indonesia as ramadan starts". Iran, where I am, is also in the middle of Ramadan. I can understand the contents of this news very well.
The economy had been bad and the market hadn't been turning well, and the supply of cooking oil had been already in shortage, even before the Russian-Ukraine conflict began. Moreover, it is certain that the shortage of food oil is becoming more serious due to Ramadan.
Because all the meals during Ramadan serve are very oily. Just only looking at them will make you feel heartburn. We eat them every day. No doubt oil consumption has skyrocketed. Oil consumption will probably reach twice or three times higher than usual. They anticipate that, it is quite normal to in anticipation of that, it is quite normal to stock in advance. So is my home.
一度聞いて面白いなあと思い、最近、ニュースで学ぶ「現代英語」を時折聞いています。
4月20日のその講座で取り上げられたニュースは『インドネシアのラマダン 食用油の高騰で打撃（Cooking oil price spike hits Indonesia as ramadan starts）』でした。私のいるところのイランもラマダンの真っ最中。このニュースの内容をよく理解できます。
ロシア-ウクライナ紛争が始まる前より、景気が悪くて市場がしっかり回らず、すでに食用油の供給が足りていませんでした。そのうえ、ラマダンと重なり、食料油の不足が深刻化しているのは確かです。
というのもラマダンの期間の食事がすっっっごく脂っこいものばかりなんです。見るだけで胸焼けしそうになりますよ。それを毎日食べるんです。間違いなく油の消費量は急上昇。油の消費量はおそらく普段の2，3倍にまで達すると思います。それを見越して、早めに買いだめをするのもごく普通なんです。我が家もそうです。

Clotted がとtotedと聞こえていたが、クリスさんが読んだときははっきり聞こえた。

食事難民になる可能性大ですから。
私のいるところはひまわり油が超売れ筋、それに大きく離れて菜種油。
ひまわり油のほうが、菜種油より安いんです。
ラマダンの時期に旅行をしたことがないので、わかりませんが、ひまわりがそれほど食用油に影響を及ぼしていたとは気がつきませんでした。
日本にもかなり影響があるそうです。
