WHO mission to visit Wuhan Institute of Virology -NHK WORLD-JAPAN -6 hours ago
NHK has learned that a team of experts from the World Health Organization plans to visit a laboratory in the Chinese city of Wuhan, which is at the center of controversy over the origin of the coronavirus.
Sources say the team is expected to visit the Wuhan Institute of Virology on Wednesday at the earliest.
The team has been conducting a full-scale probe in the city since last Friday to help find the origin of the virus.
The administration of then-US president Donald Trump alleged that the virus leaked from the institute that conducted studies on bat coronavirus.
The Chinese side has denied the allegation.
Sources say team members may meet a prominent bat coronaviruses expert, Shi Zhengli, at the institute.
Some observers believe China is trying to show its willingness to cooperate with the WHO probe by giving the team access to the institute.
Attention is on what explanations the Chinese side will give the team.
