US to rejoin Paris climate accord -NHK WORLD-JAPAN -4 hours ago
The United States is rejoining the Paris climate agreement on Friday.
President Joe Biden's administration submitted to the UN a document to return to the agreement hours after he was inaugurated on January 20. The US withdrew from the pact last November under the administration of then President Donald Trump.
The Biden administration is aiming to put the US on track to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
It is expected to present its reduction target to the UN by April.
The administration will also study a plan to provide funding as a way to help developing countries cut emissions.
It will also host a summit of world leaders, including those from major greenhouse gas emitting nations, on April 22.
A State Department official told NHK that countries need to speed up efforts to tackle climate change and that the US will call on other nations to adopt the most ambitious reduction goals they can set.
Biden has put climate change at the center of US foreign policy and national security considerations.
Analysts say he hopes his efforts on global climate action will help restore US leadership in the international community.
