Panel to mail down candidates for Games' head -NHK WORLD-JAPAN 3 hours ago
A panel tasked with selecting a candidate to become the new president of the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games organizing committee will hold its second meeting on Wednesday. It hopes to narrow down possible candidates to succeed Mori Yoshiro.
Mori offered to step down last week in a public backlash against his remarks which were regarded as demeaning to women.
The panel of four men and four women gathered in a closed-door meeting on Tuesday to discuss five qualities required for a new president.
The five criteria include having a profound knowledge of sports, as well as Olympic and Paralympics Games, and the capability to materialize gender equality and other ideals stipulated in the Olympic Charter and the Tokyo Games' visions.
The panel also agreed that a president should be competent in running organizations, and coordinating with other parties.
Sources familiar with the matter say there are also calls for person who can work together with the Japanese government and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, and win their support.
They say the panel may single out one person as its candidate on Wednesday.
The organizing committee hopes to open a board meeting to select a new president as early as this week.
