A Tokyo Metropolitan Government panel of coronavirus experts say the thorough implementation of anti-virus measures is necessary, citing rising infections among the elderly.
At its meeting on Thursday, the panel concluded that the highest alert levels for infections and medical care systems should be maintained.
The panel said that the average seven-day number of new infections
reported on Wednesday stood at 684. That is down from 1,699 three weeks earlier ,
1,471 two weeks earlier, and 1,015 one week earlier . but it noted that the number still remains high.
The panel also pointed out that people need to remain on high alert citing the increase in cluster infections among elderly people in hospitals and nursing care facilities, and surging infections among elderly people from their family members.
Members of the panel called for the thorough practice of effective anti-virus measures to decrease the number of new infections.
They said decreasing the number of new infections is also very important to secure medical staff who can administer the coronavirus vaccines.
Referring to the medical care system, the panel noted that the critical situation remains unchanged as there are no signs of a fall in the number of inpatients.
It pointed out the importance of making efforts to reduce the number of seriously ill patients by focusing on curtailing infections among the elderly who are at high risk of developing serious symptoms.
