[The Met Museum to exhibit Japanese bamboo art]
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, or The Met, in New York has held a preview of an exhibition of Japanese bamboo art.
The special exhibition showcases more than 90 items, including everyday utensils, flower baskets and contemporary artworks.
Among them is a monumental sculpture entitled "The Gate," designed to represent a fusion between Japan and the United States.
Bamboo art developed from the practice of making baskets for daily use. Met officials say that little was known in the US about the high quality of Japanese bamboo art until recently. Monika Bincsik, an assistant curator at the Met, says that she wants people to know how basketry in Japan developed into a form of art, and how remarkable creative the artists are.
The exhibition urns until February 4, 2018. (2017/6/13, NHK World)
