University Graduation Ceremony 大学の卒業式

Although school year starts in March and ends in November for universities in New Zealand, traditionally, graduation ceremonies are held in May. Even my husband who went to university many years ago, said graduation ceremonies were always in May. This maybe because in other countries in northern hemisphere schools end in May and new year start in September,

Our children are twins and they will graduate soon. They go to different university and even if they graduate this month, they have already started their next level of studies at their universities in March. Both of them will still be students for next four or five years.

Even if they are still students, I understand that each graduation is celebrated. In New Zealand it is a custom for parents and students’ partners to attend the ceremony as well. There was no ceremony which involves the parents when they started universities but the graduation seems like a big deal. The graduates wear academic gowns called regalia which they can hire from the university.

My husband and I will go to our son’s graduation first which will be held on Friday week. Although the ceremony will be in the afternoon, there will be a “procession” on the street at 9 am so we booked a hotel and stay there on Thursday night. Then on Friday night our son will stay with us in the same hotel near the airport and we all fly early morning next day to where our daughter lives. Her graduation ceremony is in the afternoon. It will be very nice to celebrate the occasion with all the family members.

NZでは学校は3月に始まり11月に終わるのですが、卒業式は昔から5月だそうです。かな〜り昔大学に行った夫の頃もそうだったとか。おそらく北半球の国では5月ごろ大学が終わり、9月に新学期だからかもしれません。

うちの子供達は双子でもうすぐ卒業です。別々の大学へ行っていて、今月に卒業式があるのですが、３月からすでにそれぞれの学部に進学しており、まだこれから4、５年は大学生が続きそうです。

院などに進学していても、卒業式はそれぞれの段階で祝われるそうです。NZの大学の卒業式は、親やパートナーなどが参列するのが普通のようで、入学した時には、親が出るような式は全くありませんでしたが、卒業式というのはずっと大きいイベントらしいです。卒業生は、レガーリアという長いガウンを着ることになっていて、大学から借りられます。

夫と私は、再来週金曜の、息子の卒業式にまず出席します。式は金曜午後ですが、朝９時からプロセッションと呼ばれる、卒業生が街を行進する行事があるので、それを見るため、木曜日にホテルに泊まることにしました。そして金曜の夜は息子もその空港近くのホテルに来て3人で泊まり、翌朝早く、娘の住む街へ飛行機で行きます。娘の卒業式はその日の午後です。家族で卒業がお祝いできるのは嬉しいことです。

Sono entrato in casa con il fiatone.
Papà era seduto al tavolo in mutande e canottiera. Aveva davanti una bottiglia di vino rosso e tra le labbra una sigaretta con il bocchino e mia sorella appollaiata su una coscia.
Mamma, di spalle, cucinava. C'era odore di cipolle e salsa di pomodoro. Il televisore, uno scatolone Grundig in bianco e nero che aveva portato papà qualche mese prima, era acceso. Il ventilatore ronzava.

僕は家に入った。父さんは、食卓にパンツとランニングトップで座っていた。前には赤ワインの瓶、口にはタバコをくわえ、妹は足の上にちょんと座っていた。母さんは、後ろで料理していた。玉ねぎとトマトソースの匂いがしていた。テレビは、白黒で、父さんが数ヶ月前に持って帰ったものだが、何かやっていた。扇風機が音を立てていた。
