「医者は　その存在理由を自ら破壊する唯一の職業である」　　ジェームス・ブライス

ブライス（１８３８～１９２２）は　5月10日に生まれたイギリスの政治家。　32歳でオックスフォード大学教授となり、　のち駐米大使となってワシントンに赴任し、　外交官として活躍した。　来日したこともある。　ブライスは　歴史家としても有名で、　その「神聖ローマ帝国」（１８６４）「アメリカ合衆国」（１８８６）の2冊は、　名著として評判が高い。　「神聖ローマ帝国」は　わずか26歳の時の著述である。　上記の文は、病気や　病人がなくなれば、　医者は　不要になるという皮肉である。

捕まえたトンボは　ビンの中

Words like “when you’re older” must appease him
「大人になったらね」という言葉になだめられ

And promises of someday make his dreams
いつかきっと夢を叶えようと誓うので

And the seasons, they go round and round
そして季節は何度もめぐっていきます

And the painted ponies go up and down
ペンキで塗られた子馬は上がったり下がったり

We’re captive on the carousel of time
私たちは時という回転木馬に乗った捕われ人

We can’t return
戻ることなどできません

We can only look behind from where we came
私たちが通ってきた足跡から、後ろを振り返るだけ

And go round and round and round
季節はめぐりめぐっては回り続けるのです

16回の春と16回の夏が過ぎていきました

Cartwheels turn to car wheels through the town
町の中では荷馬車の車輪が車に変わっています
