Well, I finally finished reading Professor Peacock’s latest book.
What did you think?
I believed about 25 percent of what he wrote. The majority of the book is pure fiction.
Why do you say that?
He jumps to too many conclusions. And there’s no evidence for his theories.
I think I agree with most of what you’re saying.
So, why are you such a big fun of his books?
I like his writing style.

◾︎ GRAMMAR
①目的語で動詞-ing 形しか許さない動詞
ピーコック教授の最新刊をやっと読み終えました。
I finally finished reading Professor Peacock's latest book.
 
動詞の目的語に「〜すること」といった動詞句的内容を使いたい時に可能な形は、動詞-ingと to 不定詞。ただ動詞によってどちらの形が使われるかには相性がある。例えば like は、どちらも取ることができるが、finish は動詞-ing形しか使えない。何か具体的な活動が行われていることを前提としているため、活動を生き生きと描写する動詞-ing形が最適となる。終える、やめる、を意味する give up, stop, quit などが同類で、これらは何かを終えるに、それが行われていなくてはならない。

②wh 節
彼が書いていることの25％くらいは信じました。
I believed about 25 percent of what he wrote.

文の部品として使われ、疑問の意図はない。ここでは（彼が書いたこと）。
percent の発音はうしろ [ pɚsént ]


◾︎ 同意の定型表現③　言質をとられない同意

私はあなたが言っていることのほとんどに同意できそうです。
I think I agree with most of what you're saying.
 
「ある程度同意なんだけど、でも完全に同意したと思われても困る」、そうしたケースはよくある。このキーセンテンスは「同意」を表してはいるが、完全な同意と受け取られないようにさまざまな工夫がなされている。まずは I think。「思います」は日本語でも断言を避けるポピュラーな言い回し。次に most（ほとんど）。wh 節 what you're saying（あなたの言っていること）に most of をつけることによって、同意していない部分があることをにおわせている。

彼らの要求すべてに同意せざるを得ませんね。
We have no other option but to agree to all their demands.
 
うーむ。君の発言の主旨には賛成かな。
Hmm... I think I agree with the main thrust of your opinion.

thrust：ジェットエンジンのように前に力強く進んでいくイメージの単語で（発言の趣旨）という意味合いに繋がっている。
 
きっとそうだろうと思います。
I suppose [that's true / you're right].
 
おそらくはそうなのでしょう。
You're probably right.
 
suppose：手持ちの情報、知識からの判断を表す動詞。I think と同様に断言を避ける効果がある。
probably：（たぶん）という可能性が含まれる単語。

英語の言語化は、yes、no を常に明示するということではなく、断言を避けたいのであれば、そのことをしっかりと言語化することが必要不可欠。


◾︎ その他

私はあなたが言っていることのほとんどに同意できそうです。しかし私の意見では状況はもう少し複雑なのです。
I think I agree with most of what you’re saying. However, in my opinion, the situation is a bit more complicated.

complicated：複雑な

however と but は、共に逆説を表しているが、however は前後の文を直接つなぐことができないことがポイント。前の文章を一回切って、だけどね、と次の文に繋がっている。
 

君の言い分にも一理あるが、もっと大きな全体像を見る必要があるよ。
I suppose you have a point there, but we need to look at the bigger picture.

have a point：一理ある・的確である複雑な
big picture：(問題などの）全体像・対局
 

君が言っているのはたぶん正しいけれど、ちょっと的を射ていない。
What you say is probably right, but it's a bit off the point.
