What we now know is that sleep deprivation is a contributing factor to the growth and metastasis of cancer.
A recent study conducted by Dr. David Gosal of the University of Chicago also demonstrates this.
現在わかっているのは、睡眠不足がガンの成長と転移の一因になっていることだ。
シカゴ大学のデーヴィッド・ゴザル博士が最近行った研究でも、それは実証されている。
Gozal first injected the mice with the cells of the malignant tumor. Over the next four weeks, the tumor will be observed for growth. Meanwhile, half of the mice slept normally and the other half were disturbed and sleep-deprived.
ゴザルはまず、マウスに悪性腫瘍の細胞を注入した。それから4週間かけて、腫瘍の成長を観察する。その間マウスの半分は普通に眠り、残りの半分は睡眠を阻害され、寝不足の状態だった。
The sleep-deprived mice had a 200% increase in both the rate and size of growth compared to mice that got enough sleep. I often present the results of this experiment in my public lectures. The audience gasped unanimously when I showed them pictures of the tumors that grew in both groups of mice. Some people cover their mouths, while others look away thoughtlessly. The tumors that formed in the sleep-deprived mice were much more aggressive and had metastasized to surrounding organs, tissues, and even bones. With modern medicine, a cancer that stays still can be treated with a fair chance. Once the disease has metastasized, however, there is nothing that can be done about it, and the mortality rate increases dramatically.
寝不足のマウスは、成長する速度も大きさも、充分に睡眠をとったマウスと比べて200％増加した。私は、一般向けの講演で、よくこの実験結果を紹介している。両方のグループのマウスの中で成長した腫瘍の写真を見せると、聴衆は一様に息をのむ。口を覆う人もいれば、思わず目を背ける人もいる。睡眠不足のマウスにできた腫瘍の方がはるかに攻撃性が強く、周辺の臓器、組織、骨にまで転移していた。現代の医学であれば、じっとしているガンならかなりの確率で治療できるようになっている。しかし転移してしまうと手の施しようがなくなり、死亡率が一気に上昇するのだ。
