My mother and computer (1) 母とコンピューター

My mother used to go to a computer class which she organised with her close friends of similar age. There were 4 ladies all in their 70’s. Their teacher was a middle aged man who retired early from high school computer teaching. She enjoyed going to the class very much. So did other ladies. It was held every second Sunday. My husband used to smile every time my mother goes there because it seemed half of their time, they were enjoying talking. Each of them used to take nice food-fruit, cakes, drink, Japanese sweets, home made food..and they enjoyed long afternoon tea with the teacher.

Unfortunately, about 10 years ago, the class ended when the teacher suddenly passed away. Soon after that, one of the ladies also passed away and the oldest person of the group moved to her son’s home, too. The group stopped computer class and my mother suddenly lost interest in computer, never touched it again.

Two years ago when my father got ill and finally gone, my mother started living by herself. When I stayed with her last time, I had a good idea. I bought a tablet and signed for three year wifi contract. I thought my mother and I can Skype regularly and maybe she can send me emails if she learns how to. Learning a new thing should be good for her brains, I thought.

母は、自分と同じくらいの歳の、仲の良い友人とコンピュータークラスを作り習っていた。四人の女性たちで、皆７０代。先生は、早期に引退した中年の元高校のコンピューター教師。母はクラスを毎回楽しんでいた。他のクラスメートたちも同様。隔週で日曜日にクラスを開いていた。私の夫はそんな母を見ると、ふふふと笑っていた。何故ならこの女性たちは皆、話好きみたいで半分の時間は話しているようだったから。四人とも毎回、何か美味しいものー果物、ケーキ、飲み物、和菓子、手作りのものなどを持参して、長いお茶の時間を設けていたようだ。

残念なことに、10年くらい前、先生が突然亡くなられ、クラスは終わった。間も無くして、四人の中の一人が亡くなった。そして一番年上の人は息子さんの家に引っ越した。クラスは消滅し、母は急にコンピューターへの興味は無くして二度と触れることもなくなってしまった。

二年前、私の父の具合が悪くなり、結局亡くなり、それ以来母の一人暮らしが始まった。前回、帰省した時、良い案が浮かんだ。私はタブレットを買い、三年のワイファイ契約を結んだ。母と私はスカイプで定期的に連絡を取ったらどうだろう。母がやり方を学べば、メールもできるはず。新しいことを学ぶのは、母の脳にも良いのでは、と思った。

"Glielo dici tu degli occhiali?
"Si, ma non le devi dire niente di dove siamo andati. Se lo scopre dirà che gli occhiali li hai rotti perché siamo saliti lassù.
"Va bene.

「メガネのこと、言う？」
「ああ。でもどこに行ったかはいったらだめだ。それを見つかったら、あそこに行ったからメガネを壊したって言われる」
「わかった」
「誓えるかい？」
「誓うわ」マリアは人差し指に唇を当てた。
