Beware the Ides of March!　「3月15日には気をつけろ!」

☆Beware the Ides of March! ：シーザー暗殺の故事に由来する、凶事の警告。 ides は古代ローマの暦で月の中日 [3・5・7・10月15日、ほかの月は13日)

1.　A whole year has passed since I began writing this column. Tempus fugit, right? Since we've reached the month of March, I thought we could take a closer look at this month and discover more about it.

☆Tempus fugit：光陰矢のごとしという意味のラテン語 (=Time flies.)

2.　As I'm sure you all know, the month of March is named after Mars, the Roman god of war. It was actually the first month of the Roman calendar, and many festivals were held to honor Mars and celebrate the start of the year. One example is the festival of Anna Perenna, the goddess of long life, held on March 15. If you look closely at both her names, you will notice that they refer to time: “anna" meaning “year", and "perenna" meaning "lasting many years". We still use the words "annual" and "perennial" today.

☆perennial：永遠の・永久の

3.　I am known to be a big Shakespeare fan, so I can't help but recall the famous line from his play, Julius Caesar: "Beware the Ides of March," foreseeing Caesar's death in the middle (Ides) of March. He was indeed assassinated on March 15. Unfortunately for him, he was not as "perennial" as the goddess Anna! But enough of such historical forebodings! Let's look at some brighter March celebrations that take place around the world today.

4.　Starting with March 1, since 2014 the UN has designated this day "Zero Discrimination Day" to promote diversity and to highlight the importance of every individual being able to live a life with dignity. The symbol of this day is the butterfly. Can you imagine why? Well, it's because the butterfly is a sign for transformation.

☆Zero Discrimination Day：差別ゼロの日 ( 2013年12 月1日の世界エイズデー式典で国連合同エイズ計画 [UNAIDS] が定めた。
☆dignity： 威嚴・尊嚴
☆transformation：変化・変質

5.　Another important cause that is promoted in March is gender equality, March 8 being the day observed globally as International Women's Day. The theme for 2021 was "#Choose To Challenge". So, the message is for everyone to challenge inequality and stereotypes in order to create a more inclusive world.

☆cause：大義・主義・目標
☆observe：祝う
☆International Women's Day：国際女性デー (1975年に制定。女性への差別撤廃と女性の地位向上を訴える)
☆inequality：不平等・不公平
☆stereotype：固定観念・ステレオタイプ
☆inclusive：誰も差別・排除しない・インクルーシブ(包括的)な

6.　On a lighter note, I have to mention March 17, St. Patrick's Day. It is celebrated worldwide due to the sizeable Irish diaspora, including here in Japan since 1992. You can enjoy Irish music and dancing, and even try some green beer! But make sure you wear something green, Ireland's national color. All the fun you can have during this festival prepares you perfectly to celebrate the International Day of Happiness on March 20!

1.昔々あるところに、王様とお妃様がいました。2人には子どもが1人もいなくてとても残念に思っていました。

Il était une fois un Roi et une Reine qui étaient si fâchés de n'avoir point d'enfants,

☆Il était une fois: おとぎ話の冒頭で「昔々あるところに･･･ がいました」他にIl y avait une fois ということもある。
☆être faché de ～：~について残念に思う
☆ne～point：古い文章表現で「少しも~ない」

2.言葉に表せないくらいに残念に思っていました。

si fâchés qu'on ne saurait dire.

☆si fachés qu'on ne saurait dire：si +形容詞・副詞 + que ... 「あまりに~なので... だ」
☆ne saurait dire：savoirが条件法現在になっているのは、語気緩和のため。 ne を伴って「~できない」

3.彼らは世界中の温泉に行きました。

Ils allèrent à toutes les eaux du monde :

☆les eaux: ここでは「温泉」

4.願かけ、巡礼、細々とした祈とう、あらゆる手段が講じられましたが、何をしても無駄でした。

voeux, pèlerinages, menues tout fut mis en œuvre, et rien n'y faisait.

☆tout fut mis en ceuvre：mettre en ceuvre「~を実行に移す」という表現が受動態で用いられている。
☆rien n'y faisait：rien n'y fait で「何をしても無駄だ」という意味の慣用表現。

5.けれども、ついに王妃は身ごもり、女の子を産みました。

Enfin pourtant la Reine devint grosse et accoucha d'une fille.

☆accoucha d'une fille：accoucher de 「~を出産する」

6.立派な洗礼式が行われました。

On fit un beau Baptême;

7.小さなお姫様に、この国で見つけることのできるあらゆる妖精を代母にしました　(妖精は7人いました)。

on donna pour Marraines, à la petite Princesse, toutes les Fées qu'on pût trouver dans le Pays (il s'en trouva sept") .

☆il s'en trouva sept : 中性代名詞 en は 妖精を指す。

8.洗礼の儀式のあと、一行は王宮に戻りました。

Après les cérémonies du Baptême, toute la compagnie revint au Palais du Roi,

9.そこで妖精たちのための大宴会が行われるのでした。

où il y avait un grand festin pour les Fées.

昨年学習した「たずねてみよう、オペラ座の世界」を復習しました。

☆白馬を訪れています。昨日の白馬三山（しろうまさんざん）の様子です。右から白馬岳、杓子岳、白馬鑓ヶ岳。今日も長野県はお天気が良さそうです。
