Ploughman’s lunch プラウマンズランチ
Staying in a cottage, everything which is needed is ready to use here so we don’t eat out much. Usually we have breakfast and dinner at the cottage and have lunch in a restaurant or cafe. Today we had lunch in a cafe at Ledbury. After checking the menu for a long time, I decided to try for “Ploughman’s lunch”. I’ve read about this long time ago. I think this is a typical pub lunch menu in England. They are usually taken by workmen in England at pubs with a pint of beer and not so much a sophisticated dish. I think usually they include a block of cheese and some pickles. Today’s plate was much bigger than I had thought. There were two slices of bread with butter, small pork pie, mature cheddar cheese, salad, chutney, ham and pickled onion. It was very filling.
Another typical dish in England would be “fish and chips”. We had fish and chips the other day for lunch. Fish was haddock. Fish is deep fried with batter and they serve a lot of fried potatoes together with the fish. They are a little like Japanese tempura but fish and chips dish lacks in vegetables. In tempura usually vegetable tempura is enjoyed together with fish tempura. In NZ also fish and chips are very common and they are a typical take away food.
コテージ滞在中は、家に何でもあるのであまり外食はしない。朝食と夕食はコテージで、ランチはレストランやカフェでとることが多い。今日は、レッドベリーのカフェでランチ。メニューを真剣に見て、私は「プラウマンズランチ」と決めた。この名前は昔聞いたことがある。英国のパブで典型的なランチらしい。気取ったものではない。肉体労働者とかが、パブで一パイントのビールと共に注文したりするらしい。通常、チーズとピクルスとか。今日の一皿は思っていたより大きかった。パン二枚とバター、小さいポークパイ、熟成チェダーチーズ、サラダ、チャツネ、ハム、玉ねぎピクルス。お腹いっぱいになった。
もう一つの典型的な英国の料理は、フィッシュアンドチップスだろう。数日前に食べた。魚は、ハドックというたらの一種。魚は衣をつけて揚げている。日本の天ぷらに似ているが、天ぷらなら魚の天ぷらと共に野菜の天ぷらが美味しいが、こちらのフィッシュアンドチップスでは野菜がとれない。この料理はNZでも非常によく食べられていて、テイクアウトの一品として代表的なものだ。
