Medieval Festival in Denmark デンマークの「中世の祭り」
There are still lots of things that I couldn’t write about our trip in UK and Denmark. Second to last day we went to a Medieval Festival which was really a huge event. When we got to the venue, I was surprised to see so many cars at the car park. Denmark is a small country with not so many people but this event must be a very popular one, I thought.
When we got to the festival area, there were so many people who dressed in medieval clothes. I am sure a lot of them enjoy dressing those clothes from time to time like cosplay? From children to old people, some dressed like medieval warriors, some dressed in merchants, religious people, musicians, farmers…etc. There were many many stalls and they were selling skins, jewelries, wooden crafts, leather bags, instruments and so on which were probably commonly sold five centuries ago. Not just things for sale but there were many stalls in which you can see and learn. There were knight’s clothes and many kind of swords, for example and people were happy to explain and demonstrate how they are used, how heavy…etc. There were lots of demonstrations of medieval sword fights, wrestling, archery, medieval musicians and dancers, noble class people on horses, medieval medicine, witches and lots of food.
One interesting thing we noticed was most of the people there seemed like Danish people. I didn’t see any Asians, and we felt like we were the only tourist from overseas. I think this festival is not advertised so much but it attracts so many local people.
英国とデンマークの旅については、まだ書けなかったことがいくつかある。最後の日の前日、私たちは「中世祭り」というイベントに行った。非常に大規模なものだった。催し場についたら、駐車場が車でものすごく一杯で驚いた。デンマークは小さな国で人口も少ないのに、こんなにぎわいとは、人気のある行事なんだろうと思った（年に一回あるらしい）。
祭り場に着いたら、非常に多くの人が中世の服を着ていた。おそらく多くの人はコスプレ？のように、時々中世の服を着て楽しむのだろうか。子供から老人まで、ある人は中世の戦士、ある人は商人、教会の人の服、音楽家の服、農民の服・・。そして、ものすごいたくさんの売り場が出ていた。毛皮、宝石（手作り）、木のクラフト品、皮のカバン、楽器・・など5世紀前に普通に売られていたようなもの。売り物だけではなく、たくさんの出店が展示物を出しており、見たり学べたりする。たとえば、騎士の衣装がいくつもあり、たくさんの武器などを説明してくれ、どう使うか、重さ・・など（実際に希望すれば持たせてくれたりする）。またデモンストレーションも多くて、剣での戦い、素手でのレスリング、弓矢、歌や踊り、高貴な人の馬に乗った様子、中世の薬、魔女、そして食べ物など。
一つ面白いと思ったことは、そこにいたのはほぼ全員？デンマーク人ではないかということ。アジア人など一人もいない。私と夫が海外からの唯一の観光客ではと思ったほど。この祭りはあまり宣伝したりしていないようなのだが、地元の人に大人気のようだった。
