Lavenham, Crooked houses ラヴェナム ゆがんだ建物の街
Lavenham is often described as one of the U.K’s most beautiful medieval villages in the heart of Suffolk. There are many interesting buildings here. One thing you notice quickly is some of the buildings are not straight. One of them is named “Crooked House” and used as a tea room. There are several other crooked houses here. In 15th century this town was very wealthy with wool industry and the town grew so fast so they used green timber for buildings. As the wood dried, the timbers warped, causing the houses to bend at unexpected angles. A lot of the houses are painted in bright colour and it is enjoyable to walk around in this town.
ラヴェナムは、サフォーク中央に位置する、英国でも最も美しい中世の残る街の一つと言われる。おもしろい建物が見られる。街に入るとすぐに、幾つかの建物がまっすぐでないことに気づく。写真は「ゆがんだ建物」という名のティールームである。他にも幾つも似たような建物がある。15世紀、この街は羊毛産業で潤い、街が急速に発展したために、急いで建物をつくらないといけなかったらしい。それでまだ乾いていない木材を使用し、乾くにつれてゆがみが生じ、予想外の方角に曲がり、それが特徴の街並となっている。また色も鮮やかに塗られ、街を散策するのが楽しい。
