　リヤドの春
イスラム教の教義を厳格に解釈するサウジアラビアで、女性の自動車運転が６月に解禁される。

１９９０年１１月６日、４７人の女性は乗用車十数台に分乗し、３０分ほど首都リヤド市内を運転した。外国滞在中に免許を取得した大学教授、主婦らによる抗議活動だった。

法律に明確に書き込まれていないが、政府に影響力を持つイスラム保守派は「女性が自由に外出すれば男女関係の乱れにつながる」と運転禁止を正当化した。

映画館も４月から解禁され、アワド文化情報相は「多様な経済発展を刺激する」と意義を強調した。

「１年前には想像もできなかったことが次々に起きている。『リヤドの春』です」。市内のレストランで、頭部のスカーフをゆるめに巻いた女性映画監督ハナ・オマイルさん（４７）が話した。英国留学中、黒澤明監督の「七人の侍」「生きる」「夢」などに心酔。サウジに戻って音楽家のドキュメンタリーなどを撮影してきた。

自らの作品は外国での上映や国内テレビ用に使われるのみだったが、ついにサウジでの上映が可能になった。「クロサワが日本人の喜びや悲しみを描いたように、私もありのままのサウジを撮りたい」と夢を語るオマイルさん。だが当局の検閲がどの程度厳しいか、前例がないため見通せない。「作品は自由に撮りたいが、次世代の映画人に迷惑をかけたくない」。保守層の怒りを買わないよう、過激な描写は避けるつもりという。

改革の一方で、強権による粛清が進むのも今のサウジだ。高齢のサルマン国王（８２）の下、着々と権力を固めるムハンマド皇太子が率いる「汚職対策委員会」は昨年１１月、王族や閣僚ら３８０人以上を汚職容疑で一斉に拘束した。
