未来を表すさまざまな慣用表現
be going to … 以外にも他にたくさんあります。
be willing to … 進んで～をする be planning to … ～することを計画中である
be expecting to … ～を予定している be supposed to … ～をすることになっている
be scheduled to … ～をする予定になっている intend to … ～するつもりである
expect to … ～を期待している want to … ～したい
wish to … ～したい
●be supposed to … ～することが想定されている、～することになっている
You are supposed to leave for New York next week, right?
来週はニューヨークに発つことになっているんだろう？
●be planning to … ～することを計画中である
I’m planning to go to New York three years from now.
今から３年後にニューヨークに発つ計画です。
●be scheduled to … ～する予定になっている
I am scheduled to go to New York next month.
来月はニューヨークに発つ予定だ。
●be willing to … 進んで～をする、～するのをいとわない
I’m willing to talk to him tomorrow.
明日、喜んで彼と話してみるよ。
これからのこと（未来・将来）について語る際に「意志」や「推量」を表現したいのならwillを使い、「予定」ならbe going to … やbe planning to … を使います。また「何かをしたい」ならwant to … 、「なにかを期待している」ならexpect to … 、「なにかを意図がある」ならintend to … 、が選択されます。
「何かをしなければならない」ならmust do、「何かをするかもしれない」ならmay do となります。これらはいずれも「これから行うこと」を表すことから、willと同様に未来表現とみなすことができます。
be about to … は未来表現ではない（近接未来という場合もあるが）
未来表現（定義上、next weekなど未来を表示する副詞とともに用いることができる表現のこと）ではない。to doで「これからする何か」が示され、be about to … で「何かをするあたりにいる」「ほぼ何かをする状態になっている」つまり「今まさに～しようとする」という意味合いになり、未来を展望した語りというより、むしろ現在のことを語る表現だといえます。
to do → これからする何か
be about to … → 何かをするあたりにいる
→ 今まさに何かをしようとしている
雲行きが怪しくなり「雨になりそうだ」

It’s about rain. 今すぐにでも降りそうだ
両者同じような意味であるが、発話の時点が仮に午前中だとして、this afternoonをつけると両者の違いがはっきりします。
×It’s about to rain this afternoon.
〇It’s going to rain this afternoon.
このぶんだと午後は雨になりそうだ、というのがIt’s going to this afternoon. でbe going to … にはbe about to … ほどの切迫感は必ずしもありません。
切迫感
Jane is about to get married. The wedding is next Sunday.
ジェーンは今まさに結婚する状況だ、結婚式は来週のに日曜日に迫っている
結婚式が数日後の日曜日ということは差し迫っている感じがしますが、１年後だとその感覚はなくなります。そこでnext yearにするとbe about to … のままでは不自然な文になります。
Jane is going to get married. The wedding is next year. なら自然な文になります。また２つの文で構成されているというところも重要です。
×Jane is about to get married next Sunday. では違和感が生まれます。
コーヒーショップの紙コップに書かれている注意書き
The beverage you are about to enjoy is extremely hot.
今、まさにあなたがたのしもうとしている飲み物はとても熱い（ので注意すること）。
Look, the water is about to boil.
（お湯が沸騰するのを見たいという幼児日曜日）ほら、お湯が沸騰するぞ。
