A:It's a good day for bird watching, isn't it?
B:Yeah, it's sunny but not too hot today.
A:Look! Can you see the cranes?
B:Yes! There are so many.
A:Cranes come from southern Europe to Sweden every spring. And for Swedish people cranes symbolize the coming of spring. There are cranes in Japan too, right?
B:Of course. They are like a symbol of Japan. I think Japanese cranes are a little different, though.
A:Just curious. Do you know how to make an origami cranes?
B:Yeah! I always made them as a child. *as a child　幼い頃
A:Oh, look, over there. I see a big animal. Can you see it? Way over there.
B:No, where? Oh, I see something now.
A:Is that a moose or is that a wild boar? What do you think?
B:I can see its antlers and face. I'm pretty sure that's moose.
A:Keep still. It's a female with a baby. Well, what do you think of Swedish nature?
B:I've never seen a wild moose before. And that baby moose is so cute. I
'm so glad I can see that natural beauty of Sweden.

■現代英語　Japanese school-bag makers eyeing next year's first-graders

Kids in Japan started a new year in April. But manufacturer of satchels is already making its pitch to parents of children who will enter the first grade next year.
Tsuchiya Kaban held a sales event in the southwestern city of Miyazaki on Sunday, the last day of spring holidays. It showcased its new line of backpacks called randseru.
Kids are expected to carry around their books and other items in the same bag during all six years of elementary school.
About 2,000 parents and children visited. 52 models randoseru models were on display. Some featured patterns on the inside.　The came in 40 colors.　The standard red and black were supplemented by trendier soft tone in purple, brown, and other hues.
A company official said popular models carry prices tags of around 600 dolars.

土屋鞄製作所さんの足立区にある工房兼ショールームには１度だけ行ったことがあります。夫のカバンを見にいったのですが、その時はショールームの2/3が仕切られてランドセルが展示されていました。コロナの時期だったこともあり、ランドセル側は入店の人数制限をかけ入口は行列ができ若いご家族で賑わっていました。
放送でカラーが４０色と紹介されていましたが、赤と黒の２色だけであった時代を思い出すと羨ましい気持ちがします。
