S1：What struck me most in my interview with Mr. Slatkin was his extraordinary love and passion for music. It's amazing that the scope of his activities has expanded with age into his 70s. The maestro is so versatile and energetic that he can't be confined to the category of conductors.

J1：Indeed. He's engaged in supporting young musicians and writing books and blogs. What I found interesting is how Mr. Slatkin interacts with the orchstra. He argued that he sometimes tries to adjust the style but not the sound. What do you think about this point?

S2：I think that make sense since the conductor's interest is the style of how the poece is played. The great orchestras of the world have already established their own sound, and Mr. Slatkin respects that. By the way, I'm concerned that education about the arts in becoming less of priority, but is the really the case in the US?

J2：Unfortunately, yes. In schools, priority is given to core subjects such as English, math, and science. Regardless of age, I think musical experiences nurture rich sensibility and creativity. Mr. Slatokin advised us just to experience the world of music by getting rid of the word " classical." Would you agree?

S3：Yes, totally. That said, the reason why we don't feel an affinity with classical music is probably because most composers are from the past. I think that what makes us like music is not only the performance but also the personalities and stories of the musicians.

J3：I see. The conductor and performers try to embody the message or emotions that the composer has put into the piece. But if we know a bit more about the composer's life or personality, it may be easier for us to get the composer's message or emotion from the performance. How about looking up online any composers that spark something within you when listening to a piece?

S4：A great idea! And when you travel, you can explore the composer's footsteps, For example, when in Paris, visit the Madeleine Church and imagine what Chopin's funeral might have looked like, or think about the historical context in which Chopin composed his famous "Revolutionary Étude." I'm sure that breathing the same culture of whichever composer you listen to will multiply your enjoyment of classical music.

■現代英語 Thai opposition parties seek coalition after election win

Thailand's two opposition parties are set to begin negotiations to form a ruling coalition.　This comes after a stunning victory by the progressive Move Forward Party over parties by the military in the general election.

Results released by electoral officials on Monday showed the Move Forward Party came first with 152 seats, and the Pheu Thai Party came second with 141 seats. The Move Forward Party's leader says it is seeking a completely democratic parliament to replace the current military-backed government.
The current parliamentary rules were drafted by the military after the 2014 coup.

Incumbent Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha lagged behind the opposition.（略）Prayut led the military coup nine years ago.
