✤✤✤REM sleep makes us more insightful

✤✤✤レム睡眠が洞察力を養う

~レム睡眠の夢を奪われた脳は、人の表情を正しく解読することができなくなる。


Let me describe the experiment that discovered this phenomenon. First, the subjects are asked to sleep overnight in a laboratory. The next morning, they are shown a photograph of one person with various expressions on his or her face. These are all different pictures of the same person.
They all have slightly different facial expressions, ranging from friendly (a faint smile, calm eyes, easy to talk to) to hostile (tightly closed mouth, furrowed brow, hostile eyes).
The changes in facial expression are minimal, but if you look at the dozens of photos as a whole, they vary widely from friendly to hostile.

この現象を発見した実験を説明しよう。まず、被験者に研究室で一晩眠ってもらう。翌朝、一人の人間のさまざまな表情を写した写真を見せる。同じ人物の全部違う写真だ。どれも微妙に表情が違っていて、友好的な顔（かすかにほほえみ、目はおだやかで、話しかけやすそう）から、敵対的な顔（硬く閉じた口、眉間のしわ、敵意のある目）までさまざまに変化する。表情の変化はごくわずかだが、数十枚の写真を全体として見れば、友好的から敵対的まで大きく変化している。



The subjects were placed in the MRI and shown photos of each expression at random.
They are then asked to judge how friendly they are.
The MRI records the brain's movements as it decodes the facial expressions in this way.

被験者をMRIに入れ、それぞれの表情の写真をランダムに見せる。その際、どれくらい友好的かを判定してもらう。MRI は、そうやって表情を解読する時の脳の動きを記録する。



Then, all subjects repeat the same experiment again. This time, however, they are asked to stay up all night and go into the MRI. Half of the subjects will do the all-night experiment first, and the other half will do the sleep-enough experiment first. The pictures used in each session will be different, so there will be no judgment based on memory.

次に、すべての被験者がまた同じ実験を繰り返す。しかし今度は、徹夜した状態でMRIに入ってもらう。被験者の半分は徹夜の実験を最初に行い、残りの半分は睡眠充分の実験を最初に行う。それぞれのセッションで使う写真は違うので、記憶にもとづいて判断を下すこともない。
