Anyone For Carrot Cake?　キャロットケーキはいかが?

1. Quite a few supporters of the Radio Eikaiwa program have expressed an interest in getting my carrot cake recipe.

2.　Before sharing my recipe, though, let's look at the history of carrot cake. Most agree that it was invented in England in the 18th century, but it became popular during the Second World War in the UK and the US, mainly due to the fact that carrots were cheap and plentiful, while sugar was rationed. Carrots replaced sugar as a natural sweetener in desserts. Carrot cake's popularity really took off in the UK and the US in the 60s and 70s, and now it's popular around the globe.

3.　I discovered carrot cake in its present form, with cream cheese frosting, while living in Australia in the early 1980s. I went into a trendy coffee-shop in Melbourne, and I saw this delicious-looking cake. I read the description and was surprised to learn that it was a cake made with carrots. I was dubious at first, since I'd only known carrots as a vegetable, but I decided to try it. It was love at first bite! The coarse wholesome texture, the super moistness, the rich nutty flavor absolutely to die for.

4.　It was not long after this that I became more seriously interested in baking. Carrot cake, chocolate brownies, shortbread and, of course, scones remain my favorites. I view baking as a kind of therapy, giving me a break from using my brain for writing or preparing lectures and using my hands instead. I find it extremely satisfying to transform shapeless ingredients into something solid that gives people pleasure.

5.　Do you want to try my recipe? Well, here you go:

CARROT CAKE:
Ingredients：200g flour・3 teaspoons baking powder・150g sugar・300g peeled and grated carrots・100g finely chopped walnuts ・170ml corn/vegetable oil ・2 eggs beaten・1 teaspoon cinnamon powder & vanilla essence
How to make it：1. Sieve flour, baking powder & cinnamon powder into bowl 2. Stir in the sugar, carrots and walnuts 3. Pour in the oil, beaten eggs and vanilla essence 4. Stir well to combine everything well 5. Finally, beat vigorously for 1 minute 6. Pour mixture into a greased cake tin lined with baking paper 7. Bake at 180°C for about 40 minutes

FROSTING:
Ingredients：70g unsalted butter/margarine・100g cream cheese or mascarpone・1/2 teaspoon vanilla essence ・70g icing/powder sugar
How to make it： 1. Beat butter until soft and smooth 2. Add cream cheese and vanilla essence 3. Gradually stir in icing sugar 4. Allow the cake to cool before spreading the frosting over the top

1.　avoir pour mission de 不定詞「~することを使命とする」

Il avait pour mission de conduire les malades à l'hôpital.
彼は病人を病院に連れていくことを任務としていた。
*mission「使命、任務」少し改まったときに使われる。
MSF a pour mission de protéger la vie humaine partout dans le monde.
国境なき医師団 MSFは世界の至る所で人命を守ることを使命としている。

2.　savoirとpouvoir
①savoir　生まれつき、また学習して身についた能力がある
②pouvoir 可能を表す　そのとき、その状況でできるかどうか

Il ne sait pas nager. 彼は泳げません。
Il ne peut pas nager aujourd'hui, parce qu'il a attrapé un rhume.
彼は風邪をひいたので、今日は泳げません。
Tu sais cuisiner ? 君は料理ができる?

3.　servir à

①servir à 名詞や不定詞「~(するの)に役に立つ、~するために使用される」
Ce bateau sert à passer la rivière. この舟は川を渡るのに役立ちます。
②Ça sert à quoi,～？ / A quoi ça sert, ~? ~は何の役に立つのですか?
Ça sert à quoi, cette machine ? この機械は何の役に立つのですか?
Cette machine sert à faire du café.
この機械はコーヒーを入れる(作る)ために使用される。
